The district round of the girls state basketball tournament was the end of the road for all the local prep teams.
Madison Heights Bishop Foley, which drew a first-round bye, had its season come to a close March 3 in a 51-44 overtime loss to Royal Oak Shrine in a Class C district semifinal.
“This was one of those games where one play here or there could have made the result totally different,” coach Dave Joseph said. “We just couldn’t find that play.”
Foley finished the year 10-11, with seven losses coming by five points or less.
“It was an exciting year for me and the girls in the sense there wasn’t one game we weren’t competitive in,” Joseph added. “No matter who we played, we gave them a game. The girls battled every single night.”
Hazel Park High was also the victim of a close game March 3. After drawing a first-round bye, the Vikings were eliminated from Class A district play by Detroit Mumford 59-56.
“It was close all night, and we fought back to give ourselves a chance. We just couldn’t find a way,” coach Jennifer Berrios said. “Their pressure got to us, and I think that was the difference.”
The Vikings ended the year 8-13.
“Our record was a little disappointing, but the good thing is we were in nearly 90 percent of the games we played,” Berrios added. “We’ll learn from this. And we’ve got some very good players scheduled to come back next year. I’m excited to see what they can do.”
Madison Heights Lamphere fell to Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day March 1 in the Class B district at Clawson High. The Rams bid farewell to seniors Jenna Stoewsand, Anne Marie Makowski, Lauren Barlog and Erin Box.
Madison Heights Madison drew a first-round bye and then fell to Bloomfield Hills Lahser 41-20 March 3, also at Clawson. The Eagles graduate seniors Amanda Smith, Autumn Cantrell and Leah Reppert.
