Ferndale High senior Ryan Watts, right, takes on Highland Park High senior Dezmond Jones Feb. 11 at home in a Division 2 team district. Watts won an individual
district and advances to the Dexter High regional, which gets under way Feb. 20.

Ryan Watts
• School: Ferndale High
• Grade: senior
• Weight class: 145 pounds
• Record: 34-1
• Finished second in 2008-09 Division 2 state final at 140
• Finished second in 2009-10 Oakland County tournament at 145 and won a Division 2 district title

Favorite part of competing as an individual:
“I feel better. It gives me satisfaction to win, because we were not really strong as a team,” Watts said. “It makes up for lack of success as a team.”

What you’ve done different competing this year:
“I’ve just done everything that I’ve done in the past harder,” he said. “I wrestle harder; I lift more after practice; I’m doing everything I did last year with more intensity and effort.”

Coach’s outlook:
“I know he’s conditioned very well. He’s quick, he’s strong and he’s motivated,” Ferndale coach Charlie Morgan said. “He wants to win a state championship, and those are the basic things (opponents) are going to have to deal with.”
